ADIDAS Basketball just rolled out a clean, minimalist sportswear collection to ring in 2023. But beyond a pile of luxe hoodies, shirts, sweats, and more, the “Remember the Why” campaign also seeks to, in a way, reboot the Three Stripes’ basketball line.

Chapter one of the collection was launched with a short film from creative agency Johannes Leonardo and creative collective ILLIMITÉWORLD, which served as a mission statement for what adidas Basketball is trying to achieve.

The three-minute vid doesn’t feature any of its big-name basketball athletes. Instead, it follows an everyman baller who, shot by shot, strips the distractions from his life until it’s just him and a deserted basketball court.

It reflects the philosophy behind the collection, which features a muted palette and a very simple design.

Within adidas, the collection also represents a behind-the-scenes shift in the basketball division.

“This is the start of the mixture of performance basketball and lifestyle basketball into one roof,” explained Jen Dacasin, senior manager, brand activation for adidas Philippines, to Spin.ph. “There was an organizational shift where basketball lifestyle and basketball performance silhouettes are managed by one group.

“This collection is the first of that whole revamp of that business unit itself. [F]or now, it's lifestyle — you cannot play with this, but the pieces themselves were designed for the basketball athlete in mind. So you have your hoodies, your sweatshirts, your tees... yun yung atake.”

The pieces, which retail for P2,500 for a tee to P5,200 for a hoodie, are “intended for that discerning basketball athlete who can wear this off the court, wherever he or she wants to go,” said Dacasin.

“It's a fresh start for adidas Basketball.”

Adidas PH held a brief holiday event, where several of its basketball athletes modeled the collection, including free agent Renzo Subido.

His “why” in basketball, he told Spin.ph, is simple: Family.

“I always make sure to give my best for them. Especially my parents. They've been working hard to give me the best future. So it's about time to give back to them,” said Subido, who also professes that he uses the Trae Young 2.0 for hoops right now.

During the event, Phoenix’s Tyler Tio echoed Subido’s own “why.”

“It's my family. I see how hard they work to make my life better, and I want to repay the favor. They're my why,” said the PBA rookie.
