ARGUABLY one of the fastest-rising fitness phenomena today, HYROX—a global race that fuses running with functional strength training—continues to gain traction in the Philippines.

Until now, local athletes had to make do with commercial gyms or improvised setups to simulate the competition environment.

But through a partnership between Gold’s Gym and Metcon, a new 750-square-meter facility has opened at the Venice Grand Canal Mall in Taguig, becoming the first of its kind in the country. The state-of-the-art gym features specialized equipment and training zones designed specifically for HYROX preparation.

“It’s a hybrid commercial gym with a fitness box. It’s a complete training space for this competition format. HYROX represents the future of functional fitness competition, and Gold’s Gym x Metcon is helping Manila join this growing trend,” said owner Edmundo Vega in an interview with SPIN.ph.

HYROX races are held in neighboring Asian countries like Thailand, Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan. The Philippines, however, has yet to host an event of its own.

In addition to the HYROX-ready facility, Gold’s Gym x Metcon also offers the GRIN Method, a proprietary training system developed by expert coach Anton Sietereales. The method has already shown impressive results among competitive athletes.

“The GRIN Method is specifically designed to prepare athletes for HYROX’s unique demands,” Sietereales explained during the launch event. “By building endurance, strength, and movement efficiency, we’ve created a training approach that delivers real results for both competitive athletes and fitness enthusiasts.”

The facility houses several units, including traditional strength training equipment, functional fitness zones, the BOOMBOX boxing club, and Cobrinha Manila Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club—making it a hub for enthusiasts of various disciplines. It also features a recovery area complete with an ice bath and sauna.

From the athletes’ perspective, four-time CrossFit Games national champion Justin Hernandez praised the new space for meeting the rigorous demands of HYROX-style training.

“Our goal is to build a solid team of competitors from right here who can make their mark at events across Asia. People buy a HYROX program and do it at a regular gym—here, you’ve got everything you need, and we track your progression,” he said.

The team demonstrated the H-700 workout at Wednesday’s media launch—a compact yet intense HYROX-style challenge combining endurance and strength. Two certified GRIN Method coaches went head-to-head: Tinoy Borromeo (commercial pilot and professional model) vs. Mauro Lumba (Philippine Muay Thai bronze medalist and Century Tuna Superbods 2014 winner). The timed challenge included a 300m run, 20 bag-facing burpees, 300m ski erg, 20 energy bag lunges, 40m sled push and pull, and 20 wall balls.

To celebrate its opening, Gold’s Gym x Metcon is offering a limited Founding Membership Package for only PHP 8,500 per month, available to the first 50 applicants. This includes personalized GRIN Method programming, customized nutrition guidance, and full access to the gym’s thermal recovery suite.
