Filipino karatekas bring home six medals from 3rd Southeast Asian meet

Nino Franco led the Philippine team that won a bronze in men's kumite.

THE Philippine karatedo team tabbed two silver and four bronze medals in the just-concluded 3rd Southeast Asian Karatedo Federation Championship in Cantho City, Vietnam.

The silver medals were provided by Christian Fontillas in the cadet male kumite-52kg class and the women’s kata team of Mae Soriano, Gay Mabel Arevalo, and Princess Sicangco.

Bronze medallists were John Matthew Manantan in the 61 kg junior kumite, Jayson Macaalay in the individual male kumite-60 kg class, Princess Sicangco in the individual women’s kumite-61 kg class, and the men’s kumite team of Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Nino Franco, Ric Maanao, Jayson Macaalay, and Andrew Manatan.

Aside from the Philippines, others which sent athletes to the meet were Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, and Brunei.
