Filipino gymnast Caloy Yulo sets sights on gold at 2020 Tokyo Olympics

    Dec 28, 2018

CALOY Yulo’s coach is confident his ward is capable of winning the gold medal in the 2020 Olympics following his bronze-medal finish in the World Artistic Gymnastics Championship in Doha last November.

Yulo, 18, won a bronze in floor exercise, a first for a Filipino and Southeast Asian at the world championship, and his Japanese coach Munehiro Kugimiya expressed confidence the Filipino gymnast can do better in the Tokyo Games.

“(I’m) so sure, he can (win) gold in Olympics - 120 percent,” said Kugimiya on Friday during a welcome party for Yulo at the Rizal Memorial Gymnastics Center. “That’s why I’m here. We have to continue the hard training. Kaya natin ‘yan.”

Yulo arrived to spend the holidays back home after spending several months in Japan training. He will return to Japan on January 5 to resume training.

Yulo will also be participating in next year’s Artistics Gymnastics World Championship, in which the top 12 gymnasts in the all-around, and the top three in each of the six apparatus – floor, vault, pommel horse, rings, parallel bars, and horizontal bar – will qualify for the 2020 Olympics.

“Kaya naman po. Siguro po ngayon nasa 50 ako. Sila nasa 90. Kaya naman po,” said Yulo.

Yulo also received a P250,000 cash incentive from the Philippine Sports Commission for his bronze victory in the world championship.

Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion also thanked the Philippine Good Works Foundation for funding Yulo’s training, the PSC for funding the salary of Yulo’s Japanese coach, and the MVP Sports Foundation for supporting Yulo.
