CARLOS Yulo had a disastrous performance in the vault during the men’s all-around qualification of the 2023 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships that began on Saturday.
Yulo failed to come up with a score in his first vault, the basis for qualification in the men’s all-around final. He scored a 13.533 in his second vault, but his average of 6.766 on the two vaults was well below the qualification standard for a place in the apparatus final.

The vault was the same apparatus where Yulo won a world title in 2021 in Kitakyushu, Japan, and where he finished with a silver medal last year in Liverpool.
With his poor showing in the vault, Yulo will essentially not qualify for the men’s all-around final as the Filipino gymnast is ranked 59th place in the all-around with a total score of 67.765 with still several more competing in the second day of the men’s qualifying on Sunday.
The World Championships is the second of four qualifying tournaments for the 2024 Olympics, which is why Yulo, as well as other top Asian gymnastics, also decided to skip the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, and compete in Antwerp where most of the individual berths for Paris are at stake.
Yulo can still secure an Olympic berth in the floor exercise.
The Filipino gymnast is running third in the floor exercise with a score of 14.600 behind Artem Dolgopyat of Israel (15.100) and Frederick Richard of US (14.600).Yulo remains on the bubble in the parallel bars where he had a silver in 2021 and bronze in 2022. He is running 10th with a score of 14.666.
Yulo is at 18th in the horizontal bar with 13.700, 41st in the pommel horse with 13.233, and 90th in the rings with 11.566.
