CALOY Yulo made it to the finals of the 48th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championship after finishing in 12th place in the two-day qualifying round of the men’s all-around in Doha, Qatar.
The 18-year-old Yulo scored 81.230, enough to clinch a finals berth after placing within the top 24 among 292 athletes competing in the first qualifying tournament for the 2020 Olympics.
Yulo’s effort was also buoyed by his fourth-place finish in the floor exercise, his pet event. He was also running fifth after Day One of the qualifiers.
Xiao Ruoteng of China topped the qualifiers with a score of 87.332, followed by Nikita Nagornyy of Russia (87.098) and Samuel Mikulak of United States (86.598).
Yulo is the first FIlipino to reach the individual all-around final in the world championships, according to Gymnastics Association of the Philippines secretary general Bettina Pou.
