Carlos Yulo misses out in the first of his three finals at the worls meet.

CALOY Yulo wound up in fifth place in the floor exercise of the 50th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships on Saturday in Kitakyushu, Japan.

Yulo could not repeat his world championship win three years ago, scoring 14.566 in his routine, with Nicola Bartolini of Italy winning the gold with a score of 14.800.

The Filipino gymnast registered 8.266 in the execution and 6.600 in the difficulty, the best among the eight finalists, but Yulo got a -0.3 deduction after nearly losing his balance in a part of his routine.

Kazuki Minami of Japan took the silver medal with a score of 14.766 while Emil Soravuo of Finland bagged the bronze with a score of 14.700.

Caloy Yulo finishes out of the podium places after topping the prelims.

In his first world competition since the Tokyo Olympics, Yulo scored 15.166 to top the qualifiers.

The 21-year-old Yulo though still has two chances of winning a medal in the world championship as he is also entered in the final of the vault and the parallel bars.

The deduction proved costly in his chances at winning the gold in the floor exercise, his pet event. Yulo could only smile at the end of his routine, knowing he had missed the world title due to the miscue.

Yulo will go up against Hidenobu Yonekura of Japan, Hakseon Yang of Korea, Courtney Tulloch of Great Britain, Andrey Medvedev of Israel, Thomas Grasso of Italy, William Emard of Canada, and Nazar Chepurnyi of Ukraine in the vault final on Sunday starting at 4:25 p.m. (3:25 p.m. Philippine standard time).

He will also be vying for a medal in the parallel bars along with Daiki Hashimoto of Japan, Kaya Kazuma of Japan, Christian Bachmann of Switzerland, Caio Souza of Brazil, Hu Xuwei of China, Yul Moldauer of the United States, and Shi Cong of China. The event starts at 6 p.m. (5 p.m. Philippine standard time)
