GOLDEN girl Yuka Saso will serve as the country’s flag bearer in the Youth Olympic Games that comes off the wraps on Oct. 6 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
The lady golfer was given the special task prior to the Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) General Assembly held Thursday at the Meralco auditorium.
Saso, a double gold medalist for the country in the last 18th Asian Games in Indonesia, will lead a compact seven-man Philippine team vying in the three-week meet featuring athletes from around the world aged 14-18-years-old.
On account of her Asiad feat, the 16-year-old Saso is the best bet of the Filipinos to win a gold in the quadrennial meet.
Luis Gabriel Moreno teamed up with China’s Li Jiaman to win the mixed team gold during the 2014 edition of the tournament held in Nanjing, China.
Joining Saso in this year’s team are fencer Lawrence Everett Tan (men’s foil individual), table netter Jann Mari Nayre (men’s singles), swimmer Nicole Justine Oliva (women’s 100-m freestyle and backstroke, 200-m freestyle and backstroke, 400-m freestyle, 50-m freestyle, 800-m freestyle), sailor Christian Tio (sailing, kiteboarding TTR men), and archer Nicole Tagle (women’s recurve individual).
“I hope this batch of Filipino YOG athletes can also bring home a medal similar to what we had accomplished in the previous YOG,” said PH team Chef de Mission Jonne Go.
Aside from Go, also part of the small Filipino delegation are POC Secretary General Pato Gregorio and POC General Manager Art Aro, and three officials from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) led by Executive Director Merly Ibay.
The contingent will leave in two batchers respectively, starting Oct. 1 and Oct. 3.
