REIGNING world junior champion Kristopher Arevalo's partnership with Raymart Tolentino is tipped as the favorite in the centerpiece Group I of the NGAP’s National Doubles championship presented by the MVP Sports Foundation starting on Wednesday at Eastridge in Binangonan, Rizal.
Arevalo-Tolentino banners a select field in the premier division of the 54-hole event serving as a leg of the PLDT Amateur Golf Tour and backed by Pancake House, Golf Depot and Pacsports, even as trophies in Group II and in the mid-am division are also at stake.
The highlight of Arevalo’s season was his triumph in the 13-14 division of the Callaway Junior World Championship in San Diego a few months back, and he will be looking to end the year with a bang in partnership with Tolentino.
Gabriel Manotoc-JP De Claro and the brothers Basti and Santiago Lorenzo combines also look to be very formidable on paper in the event that will have the teams playing two-ball foursome (alternate shot) in the first round, four-ball (best ball) in the second round and aggregate in the last day.
Another team worth watching is the combination of Junel Roxas and the comebacking Tonlits Asistio, the former Philippine team spearhead and pro who will play his first major tournament after coming back from gunshot injuries that almost took his life more than two years ago.
Asistio has been visible in golfings circle lately, even caddying for Charles Hong who finished in the Top 10 of the Asian Tour’s $750,000 Resorts World Manila Masters at Southwoods last month.
The Mid-Am division will feature players who are 30 and above regardless of their handicap indices, while Group II is for players with handicaps of 5.1 and above.
