THE World Corporate Golf Challenge (WCGC), through its executive partner Premiere Sports Management, is finally bringing the world’s largest corporate golf tournament the country with the staging of the first-ever National Qualifying this August.
Slated from August 26-27 at Mimosa Golf Club in Clark Pampanga, this major event is expected to bring together executives of top corporations vying for the opportunity to represent the country in the World Finals in Beijing, China in October.
“We have had many tournaments in Europe and the Americas but it makes sense for us to go to Asia because, as a strategy at the end of the day, we know that it is a growing area in terms of economy,” WCGC chairman Jose Guerra said in a media launch held at Mimosa Golf Club in Clark, Pampanga on Tuesday.
WCGC World Finals in Manila next?
The WCGC is entering the last of a three-year deal with China as host and actually is on an active search to secure a destination. This partnership with Premiere Sports could very well be the beginning of a major event in the future.
“The group pitched to us the idea of having the WORLD Finals in the Philippines for 2027 and 2028. We studied it and was impressed with what it can offer — a place with a great history, good resorts, perfect climate and fantastic golf courses,” Guerra said.
He added: “We especially like Manila for it is an ideal gateway to almost all sites in the world, which is important to us.”
Guerra and Premiere Sports Management, through its chairman Joyce Escandor, already made its courtesy call to Philippine Sports Commission chairman Patrick “Pato” Gregorio and the initial meet-up yielded a very positive outlook.
“It would be an honor to have the PSC on board as this is line with its sports tourism program,” he said.
Joey Fornier, COO of Premiere Sports, noted that: “It is where golf meets business. The captains of the industry, the movers and shakers, all in one spectacle. This would be truly special.”
Premiere Sports Management president Paulo Legaspi said that the arrival of WCGC will elevate the sport and create more opportunities for golfers and corporate players alike.
“WCGC signifies not only the strength and prestige of the global golfing community but also the continued growth of corporate golf as a platform for camaraderie, excellence and international collaboration,” Legaspi stated.
