RUPERT Zaragosa and Rolando Pila held off their respective semifinal rivals on Thursday, while Lois Kaye Go and Harmie Constantino sealed a women’s title clash with lopsided victories in the MVPSF Visayas Regional Match Play Championship at the Cebu Country Club.
The top-seeded Zaragosa swept the Magcalayo brothers to earn a crack at the championship, fending off Jonas, 3 and 1, in the morning quarterfinals then stopping Jolo, 3 and 2, in the semis.
No. 2 Pila, a local caddie who ended Gabriel Manotoc’s surge, 2 and 1, in the Last Eight, thwarted Marko Sarmiento, 3 and 2, in the semis.
Go beat Ryoko Nagai, 9-7, in the quarterfinals and defeated Junia Gabasa, 4 and 3, to cruise into the finals.
Constantino, the reigning national stroke play champion, defeated Riko Nagai, 9-8, in the quarters and beat Angela Mangana in the semis, 5 and 3.
Manotoc earler nipped Jaylord Abadilla, 1-up, while Sarmiento edged No. 3 Mark Dy on the 19th hole.
Both finals are set over 36 holes with Gabasa and Mangana and Jolo Magcalayo and Sarmiento disputing third place honors in their respective sides over 18 holes in the tournament sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation, Smart, PLDT, Metro Pacific Investments Corp. and the Philippine Sports Commission, held as part of the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour and organized by the National Golf Association of the Philippines.
