    Rupert Zaragosa, Tom Kim ease to second round of Philippine Amateur Open Match Play

    Amateur star Rupert Zaragosa eases to the round of 16.

    TOP seed Rupert Zaragosa and No. 2 Tom Kim of Korea scored romped past their first-round rivals on Wednesday in the 2016 Philippine Amateur Open Match Play Golf Championship at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite.

    Zaragosa stormed past Eric Gallardo, 5 and 3, for a second round clash with Ira Alida, who downed Ivan Monsalve, 4 and 3.

    Kim, winner of the Philippine Junior stroke play crown two weeks ago, clobbered Marc Corrales, 6 and 5, to advance against No. 18 John Jun, who upended No. 15 Nathan Kawpeng, 3 and 2.

    No. 30 GJ Katigbak beat third seed Ryan Monsalve on the 19th hole to advance to the second round against Don Petil, who eased past Inigo Raymundo, 4 and 3.

    Japan’s Takuya Kawamura, 29th in the 36-hole stroke play eliminations, dominated club bet No. 4 seed Ace Stehmeier, 4 and 3, for a Last 16 clash with Ricar Candinato, who subdued Jolo Magcalayo, 2 and 1.

    No. 25 Marc Lu edged No. 8 Lanz Uy, 1-up, to arrange a second-round faceoff with No. 9 Jay-R Salahog, who thwarted Peter Po, 3 and 2.

    Seventh seed Jelbert Gamolo came away with a 6 and 5 rout of JP De Claro, and will next take on Noel Langamin, who knocked off Bobby Celestino, 3 and 2.

    Japan’s Yuto Katsuragawa, No. 6, beat Airon Sorino, 4 and 2, setting a duel with Joseph Orbito, who survived Nico Sevilla, 1-up.

    Cebu’s Rolando Pila beat Aaron Dimabuyu, 1-up, to set up an encounter with fifth ranked Luigi Guerrero, who trounced Brixton Aw, 3 and 2.

    In women’s play, Annika Guangko escaped with a 1-up victory over Carla Canto, setting up a match with top seed Kristine Torralba, who drew a first round bye.

    Eagle Ace Superal defeated Nikki Bruce, 5 and 3, to arrange a quarters clash with No. 2 Jona Magcalayo in the PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour event conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines and sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation, Smart, PLDT and Metro Pacific Investments Corp.
