RUPERT Zaragosa and Luigi Guerrero shot four-under 68s to set the pace in the eliminations of the 2016 Philippine Amateur Open Match Play Golf Championship on Monday at Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite.
Zaragosa, winner of the Visayas Regional Match Play in Cebu two weeks ago, gunned down three birdies in the first nine holes and closed out with two more against a bogey.
Guerrero birdied the final hole to gain a share of the lead after faltering with two late bogeys.
Ace Stehmeier shot a 71, which was matched by Rolando Pila and Jelbert Gamolo.
Ryan Monsalve carded a 73 for joint sixth with Lanz Atienza Uy and Tom Kim of Korea, while Joseph Orbito made a 74.
Mark Lu and Noel Langamin turned in 75.
Kim, coming off a victory in the Philippine Junior Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship, hit two birdies in the first five holes but struggled in the closing holes with bogey on No. 14 and double-bogey on the 17th.
Japan’s Yuto Katsuragawa shot a four-over 76 with a double-bogey on the last hole.
Kristine Torralba, Jona Magcalayo and Nicole Abelar shot 78s to share the women’s lead.
Korea’s A Eun Koh is in fourth after an 81 followed by Diana Araneta at 82.
Hwang Min Jeong, winner of a ladies pro event last year, had an 83.
Tomi Arejola and Eagle Ace Superal submitted identical 85s in the event organized and conducted by the National Golf Association of the Philippines and held as PLDT Group National Amateur Golf Tour and sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation, Smart, PLDT and Metro Pacific Investments Corp.
