RUPERT Zaragosa and JP de Claro fired a one-under-par 71 in alternate shot play to grab a two-stroke lead over Ricar Candinato and Ariel Villasencio on Wednesday in the National Doubles championship at Eastridge Golf Club in Rizal
Zaragosa-De Claro gunned down two birdies against a bogey and posted nines of 35-36 for a 148 total.
The duo erased a one-shot deficit in its first nine after making the turn at 35 before playing steady the rest of the way as Candinato and Villasencio struggled to shoot a 76.
Luis Castro and GJ Katigbak, who fumbled with an opening 84 in the four-ball on Tuesday, rebounded with a day-best 70 to get in the mix, trailing by six even as the Jude Eustaquio-Migs Garcia pair shot itself in the foot with a 79.
Eustaquio and Garcia, who started the day just two shots behind, had a bogey-double bogey-par-bogey start to their back nine and never recovered. They trail the new leaders by nine.
While Group I action remains tight, Jing Romero and Martin Guiang built a comfortable Group II lead after shooting a 75 for an 11-shot advantage over Paqo Barro-Aldo Barro, which pooled an 83.
Koreans continued to dominate the ladies division with Hwang Min-jeong and Seong Eun-jeong shooting a 70 for 146 that opened up a nine-shot lead over Koh Eun-ah and Song Min-jong, who shot 73 in the event presented by the MVP Sports Foundation as part of the PLDT Group Amateur Tour.
Meanwhile, the organizing National Golf Association of the Philippines announced that the Philippine Amateur championships will tee off Jan. 9 next year with players from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries seeing action.
LJ Go, the Cebu Country Club ace in the Philippine Airlines Interclub, will be defending the men’s championship.
