CYNA Rodriguez birdied No. 18 to salvage a one-over 72 and tie Sarah Ababa at the top even as Jayvie Agojo moved within one stroke with a solid 69 in the second round of the Hong Kong Ladies Amateur Open Thursday at the Discovery Bay Golf Club.
Rodriguez hit three birdies but had four bogeys on another windy day at the Diamond and Jade courses for a 140 total, matching Ababa who stumbled with a three over 74.
After turning in an awesome five-under 66 Wednesday, Ababa went awful with bogeys on Nos. 9, 13 and 17 without a birdie to show, setting up a wide open battle for the crown in Friday’s final round of the 54-hole championship.
Agojo made sure to get into the mix, shooting one of the day’s two best scores of two-under 69 and closing in on her teammates at 141 in a tie with local bet Michelle Cheung, who made a 70.
Seeking to retain the crown she won in imposing fashion last and trying to clinch a second international crown in as many weeks, the 26-year-old Agojo gunned down three birdies set up by superb iron shots to negate her lone bogey on No. 10.
She also virtually wrapped up the mid-amateur crown for the second straight year as she posted a whopping eight-stroke lead over Guioguio, who had a 149 after a 73.
Thailand’s Kamonwan Lueamsri carded a 74 and stood just three shots back at 143 with Hong Kong’s Tiffany Chan while Isabella Leung, another local bet, pooled a 144 after a 69.
Thai Chayant Wangmahaporn struggled with a 73 and dropped to 145 while the rest stood too far behind the leaders, including Daniella Uy (80-150). Princess Superal had a 71 for a 152 total and Eva Minoza had a 80 for a 155.
