BRUNEI DARUSSALAM - Mia Legaspi scored a five-under-par 67 and Pauline del Rosario had a three-under-par 69 for a 136 total by the Philippines and a three-stroke lead over powerhouse Thailand Monday in the 6th Santi Cup of the 54th South East Asian Amateur Golf Team Championship at the Empire Hotel and Country Club here.
Princess Superal had a four-over-par 76 that did not count, as Team Philippines held on to the lead after the opening round as the Thais tallied a 139 total built on the 69 of Suvathee Chanachai and the 70 of Parinda Phokan.
Two shots back at 141 were the Singaporean pair of Koh Sock Hwee (67) and Amanda Tan (74).
Legaspi, gold medalist in last year’s Asian Youth Games, was at three-under at the turn and needed a closing birdie on the 18th to finish with a 67.
Winner of the Long Beach Championship early this year, Del Rosariorolled in a five-foot birdie on the second hole, drained a six-footer on the fifth for another birdie, and then holed out a 30-footer on No. 8 to negate a bogey on the third after going even par at the back side of the scenic sea-side course for her first nine holes.
The Filipinas’ performance more than made up for the struggles of the Filipinos in the premiere men’s competition.
Kristoffer Arevalo had a 74 and Justin Quiban and Rupert Zaragoza with a 75 each for a 244 total, about 17 shots adrift off pacesetting Thailand (207).
Malaysia is running at second with a 211 total followed by Singapore at 212.
Thailand also paced the 8th Lion City Cup with a 144 total behind the 70 of Suradit Yongcharoenchai and 74 of Ekthimrong Luangnuruk.
In the Kartini Cup, it’s also Thailand on top with a 134, followed by Indonesia (145) and the Philippines (147), with Yuka Saso of ICTSI and Harmie Constantino scoring 70 and 77, respectively.
