TEAM Philippines looks to take the top spot this time after a runner-up finish last year and coach Bong Lopez believes the course in Jeju-do, South Korea suit the Filipinas’ game for the 38th Queen Sirikit Cup starting on Wednesday at the Ora Country Club.
Princess Superal, Pauline del Rosario and Yuka Saso are back, ready to do battle and prevent the hosts from extending their domination of what is also known as Asia-Pacific Ladies Golf Team Championship.
“This is the best team that we can bring here,” said national team coach Bong Lopez after two practice rounds.
“The course is good for us, not too long but hilly with undulating greens. The better players will shine.”
Superal and Del Rosario won in Malaysia last month, with the former taking the Kuala Lumpur Amateur Open crown and the latter romping off with the Johor Open title.
Gold medalist Park Hyun-kyung is back, joined by new team members Choi Hye-jin and Lee Gayoung.
Saso gets to lead Team Philippines’ bid as she tees off first with Hong Kong’s Chole Chan and Taiwan Chen Hsuan. Superal has been grouped with Choi and Hong Kong’s Ding Virginie.
Del Rosario anchors the squad and will play with Hung Jo-jua of Taiwan and Malaysia’s Warda Rawof.
Other teams seeing action are Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Myanmar, China and Japan.
