MORE than 80 players, including several Interclub stars, tee it up on Wednesday as the NGAP’s Philippine Senior Amateur and Mid-Am championships get underway at Malarayat Golf Club in Lipa City.
Former champions Francis Gaston, Dave Hernandez and Rolly Viray headline the huge field, which will also feature Philippine Sports Commission chair Richie Garcia in the Open division for players 60 and above.
Commissioner Iggy Clavecilla also plays his first competitive tournament in close to a year, with the core of the Canlubang and Luisita teams in the Interclub seeing action.
Gaston and Viray are two of a handful of players who have won the Men’s Philippine Am and Senior’s titles in their careers and both will be marked men in the 54-hole event backed by Pancake House, Nike, Golf Depot and Pacsports.
Mining Maravilla, Lino Magpantay and Pepot Inigo of Luisita and Cangolf’s Tony Olives, Bing Bunye and Mari Hechanova are also entered together with Clifford Celdran and Jeric Hechanova, the past and current managers of Cebu Country Club.
The Mid-Am is restricted to players 30 years old and above and will have two other divisions aside from the Open. Division II is restricted to players 30-54 years old with indices 7.0 to 12.0, and Division III is be for players who have handicaps of 12.1 but not more than 18.0.
