PGA Tour: Hoey tied for 48th; Smith leads

Hoey had two birdies and an eagle in his second round but three bogeys negated the effort

RICO Hoey scored a 2-under-par 68 and continued his grind at the Charles Schwab Challenge where he dropped to a share of 48th place, six strokes behind the leader.

Hoey had two birdies and an eagle in his second round Friday (Saturday in Manila) but three bogeys negated the effort at the Colonial Country Club in Texas that placed him at 3 under overall.

Meanwhile, Ricky Castillo, whose Filipino parents migrated to the US when he was young, followed his opening round 65 with a 69 and was tied at 14th spot at 6 under.

Castillo, 25, now an American citizen, trails leader Jordan Smith by four strokes after the Englishman shot a second consecutive 65.

Lurking are four players who are tied one stroke behind led by former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama, while defending US Open champion J.J. Spaun is two strokes further at after a 68.

Matsuyama and Michael Thorbjornsen had matching 65s at 9 under along with Ryan Gerard (67) and 2023 The Open champion Brian Harman (66).

Spaun was joined by Akshay Bhatia (65), Russell Henley (66), Brice Garnett (66) and Alex Smalley (67).
