    Apr 27, 2017

PETER Tyler Po knocked off top seed Rupert Zaragosa then bundled out last year’s champion Noel Langamin on Thursday to reach the finals of the the Philippine Amateur Open Match Play Golf Championship at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Top seed Yuka Saso and No. 2 Harmie Constantino arranged a showdown for the women’s crown.

The ninth-ranked Po scored a 2 and 1 victory in the quarterfinal against Zaragosa in the morning then tripped Langamin, 3 and 2, in the semifinals in the afternoon.

The 17-year-old Cebuano arranged a title showdown with No. 2 Jolo Magcalayo, who defeated Aniceto Mandanas, 2 and 1, before dominating Luis Castro, 5 and 4.

“I didn’t expect to beat Rupert. The chance to play with him is already a big opportunity but beating him is an honor,” said Po, a club junior titlist still in search for a national championship.

Saso beat Korea’s Yang Ju Young, 5 and 3, in the quarterfinals and downed Kayla Nocum, 4 and 2, in the semis.

Constantino defeated Alex Etter, 7 and 5, before beating Kristine Torralba, 5 and 4.

Saso is looking to complete a back-to-back title romp after dominating the Philippine Junior Amateur Strokeplay last week.

The finals of the tournament sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation are set over 36 holes.
