JUVIC PAGUNSAN came up with a three-under 69 to stand four strokes behind former US Masters champion Charl Schwartzel in the first round of the Thailand Golf Championship on Thursday.

Pagunsan made four birdies against one bogey at Amata Spring Country Club to share 10th spot with a large group that included Spanish Ryder Cup star Sergio Garcia.

Schwartzel was near-flawless in recording nines of 32-33 and took a one-stroke lead over local bet Thitiphun Chuayprakong, who went 33-33 in a bogey-free performance.

Daniel Chopra and Javi Colomo scored 67s, while reigning Masters champion and world No. 12 Bubba Watson had a 68 and was in a tie for fifth.

Mars Pucay hit five birdies but also had two bogeys and a double-bogey, all on par-4s, for a one-under 71.

Miguel Tabuena traded three birdies for three bogeys for an even-par 72, while Elmer Salvador had an opening-round 73.

Japan Senior Open champion Frankie Miñoza made just one birdie in a 76, and Antonio Lascuna scored an 80 and was just a stroke above the bottom of the field.
