IN a move that aligned the country’s grassroots development for golf, the National Golf Association of the Philippines (NGAP) tapped the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines (JGFP) to conduct the qualifiers for this year’s Uswing Mojing Junior World Championships in San Diego, California.
The partnership was recently approved following talks between top officials of the two groups in what could benefit the growth of golf from the grassroots level.
The qualifying tournament is set March 15-17 for the boys division, while the girls category will be played on March 27-29 both at the Luisita Golf and Country Club in Tarlac City.
The Uswing Mojing Junior World Championships will be played from July 4-9.
“The National Golf Association of the Philippines is pleased to partner with the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines in staging the qualifiers for the Junior World Championships in San Diego, California,” said NGAP president Martin Lorenzo and NGAP chairman Al Panlilio.
“This collaboration highlights our shared commitment to grassroots and junior golf development, and to providing young Filipino golfers the opportunity to compete and excel on the international stage.”
Panlilio, the former president of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP), was one of the amateur players that competed at the Pro-Am, as well as JGFP president Oliver Gan and junior golf “godfather” former congressman Mikey Arroyo. They finalized the partnership with Lorenzo.
“We have always been willing to work with NGAP. Our president Oliver Gan is very able (to lead in organizing the qualifying meet). He has made the JGFP very big now in terms of numbers (members),” said Arroyo.
NGAP secretary general Bones Floro said the qualifiers offer four slots each for the boys and girls divisions in the 11-12, 13-14 and 15-18 age group categories, while the 7-8 and 9-10 divisions will have three each.
