Rupert Zaragosa, Kristine Torralba earn top seeding for Match Play Championship

RUPERT Zaragosa continued his strong play to take low medal honors in men’s play as Kristine Torralba topped the women’s side by a hairline on Tuesday, gaining the top seeding for the 2016 Philippine Amateur Open Match Play Golf Championship at the Orchard Golf and Country Club in Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Zaragosa added a 71 to his opening 68 to set up a duel with No. 32 Eric Gallardo.

Torralba ended up on top despite an 82, nipping erstwhile co-leader Jona Magcalayo for the honors with a 160 after the 36-hole stroke play eliminations.

Magcalayo shot an 83 for a 161, while Korea’s Hwang Min-jeong posted a 79 to finish third followed by Koh Eun A (83-164), Diana Araneta (87-169, Tomi Arejola (92-177) and Eagle Ace Superal (92-177).

Korea’s Tom Kim, winner of the recent Philippine Junior Amateur Open Strokeplay Championship, also had a second-round 71 to take the No. 2 seeding in the match play at 144.

Ryan Monsalve finished third at 145 after a 72 while Ace Stehmeier and Luigi Guerrero wound up tied at 147.

Japan’s Yuto Katsuragawa had a 75 for a 148, the same output by Jelbert Gamolo, who limped with a 77.

Lanz Atienza Uy shot a 78 for a 151 and Noel Langamin (77), Jay-R Salahog (75), Joseph Orbito (78) and Rolando Pila (81) all finished at 152.

Kim takes on No. 31 Marc Corrales, Monsalve faces No. 30 GJ Katigbak, Stehmeier clashes with No. 29 Takuya Kawamura, Guerrero collides with No. 28 Brixton Aw, and Katsuragawa squares off with No. 27 Airon Sorino in the morning matches.

Winners battle it out for quarterfinal berths in the afternoon in the tournament sponsored by the MVP Sports Foundation, Smart, PLDT and Metro Pacific Investments Corp.
