Mikha Fortuna, Lois Kaye Go off to fine start in US Girls Junior Championship

MIKHA Fortuna carded a one-over 72 while Lois Kaye Go turned in a 73 at the start of the US Girls’ Junior Championship at the Boone Valley Golf Club in Augusta, Missouri on Monday (Tuesday, Manila time).

Fortuna mixed three birdies with four bogeys for nines of 38-34 as The Country Club bet joined four others at 19th, four strokes behind pacesetting Mika Liu.

Caroline Hodge and Brianna Navarrosa fired 68s to share second spot.

Go, set to see action for the Philippines in next month’s SEA Games in Malaysia, was one under through 11 holes but suffered three straight bogeys from No. 13 and wound up in 24th place, safely within the cut line.

The top 64 after the stroke play advance to the match play phase of the event ruled by Princess Superal via a playoff in 2014.

Annika Cedo and Samantha Bruce, however, hobbled with 10-over 81s.

Cedo had five bogeys, a double-bogey and a triple-bogey in a birdie-less run with nines of 40-41, while Bruce limped with seven bogeys and a triple bogey at the back for nines of 36-45. They were at joint 121st.

Liu birdied four of the first seven holes, including three straight from No. 5, to seize control of the 155-player field in the first 36 holes of stroke play competition.

Hodge and Navarrosa shot identical 68s to trail Liu by one while Thai Paphangkorn Tavatanakit carded a 70 to join four others at fourth.
