Miñoza wins TCC Invitational in playoff

Miñoza, 53, holds off Bayron brothers in playoff to end title drought

Frankie Miñoza, at 53 the most senior in the 37-player tournament, emerges as the big winner.

FRANKIE Miñoza wasted a four-stroke lead with a closing 78 and needed two playoff holes to claim the TCC Invitational title on Sunday at the The Country Club in Canlubang, Laguna.

The 53-year-old Miñoza, who fired a tournament-best 64 in the third round, skidded in the high-scoring final round and was caught by brothers Jay (71) and Rufino Bayron (74) at 283.

Jay Bayron was first to fall with a bogey in the first playoff hole, then Miñoza grabbed the title and the P1.5 million prize in the second with a five-foot par putt in the second hole as Rufino failed to make his four-foot putt.

“It’s a dream come true for me, being 53 years old and winning against younger competitors,” said Miñoza.

The victory also erased the stigma of his playoff loss to Juvic Pagunsan in the 2008 edition of the event held in honor of International Container Terminal Services Inc. founder Enrique “Don Pocholo” Razon Sr.

Jay Bayron, who topped the Asian Development Tour Order of Merit last year, gained a shot at the crown by closing out with three pars in a flight ahead of Miñoza and Rufino Bayron, who both made bogeys on the tough finishing hole.

Defending champion Pagunsan, seven strokes down after three rounds, finished with a 72 and missed the playoff by one.

Angelo Que, a three-time winner of the event, also wound up with a 284 total with a final-round 70.

Elmer Salvador also matched par 70 to wind up solo sixth at 287, while Ferdie Aunzo (71), Carl Santos-Ocampo (75), and Cassius Casas (76) shared seventh place at 288.

Tony Lascuna, who dominated the ICTSI-Philippine Golf Tour last year, carded a 73 for joint 10th with Clyde Mondilla (77), while Miguel Tabuena finished with a 76 for a 290.
