MIGUEL Tabuena carded an even par 72 and tied for 16th place in the Yeangder Tournament Players Championship in Taiwan Sunday, his first tournament since ending his stint with LIV Golf last month.
Tabuena shot the best score of the tournament during the third round Saturday, a 10-under-par 62, but could not replicate the magic in the final round, scoring 10 shots worst.
He posted a four-day total of 272, 16 under par, and took home $15,180 (about P1 million). Tabuena was three shots behind the leader at the start of the round.
Justin Quiban, the other Filipino who advanced to weekend play, shot a final round 5-under-par 67 and tied for 32nd place, bringing home $8,640 (about P530,000). He was 12 under for the tournament with his total of 276.
Three other Filipinos who competed in the $1.2 million Asian Tour event – Carl Jano Corpus, Angelo Que and Aidric Chan -- did not make the cut pegged at 3 under.
Though Tabuena, 31, may not have challenged for the title on the final day, his Taiwan stint could prove valuable. He was able to put in a significant amount preparation as he proceeds to the Asian Games in Japan where he is expected to lead the country’s campaign for a medal this week.
Pavit Tangkamolprasert of Thailand captured the championship by one stroke after firing a 6-under-par 66 for his first win on the Asian Tour in seven years.
His four-day total of 263, 25 under par, nipped Japan’s Kazuki Higa who shot a 66 while a stroke farther at 23 under was Taiwan’s Hung, Chien-yao who had a 65 in the final round.
