MIGUEL Tabuena fired a closing three-under par 68 on Sunday and finished joint runner-up behind Aussie Marcus Fraser in the rich Maybank Open Malaysia at the Royal Selangor Golf Club.
The Filipino rising star was well settled in solo third after closing his tournament with a birdie and rose to joint second when overnight leader Soomin Lee of Korea collapsed with a double bogey at the last.
That allowed Fraser to snatch a two-shot victory in the US$3 million event jointly sanctioned by the Asian and European Tour with a closing 68 and a four-day total of 15-under 269.
Lee, who led by three overnight, blew a running two-shot lead with a double bogey-par-double bogey finish and slipped to a tie for second with Tabuena on an 13-under 271 total.
The two each won US$262,565, or P12.42 million under current exchange rates.
Tabuena, who had earlier rounds of 66,68 and 69, also moved up to second in the Asian Tour's Order of Merit rankings with winnings of $310,658 through three events - just behind Fraser who banked $500,000 for his third European Tour victory.
