THE six-man Philippine contingent in the International Series Japan golf championship was wiped out like bowling pins after the second round Friday
Led by LIV Golf wild card Miguel Tabuena, none of the country’s bets advanced to the third round after missing the cut at the Caledonian Golf Club in Chiba, Japan.
Tabuena shot a one-over-par 72 to go with his 71 Thursday and his 143 total at plus one was two shots below the cutline, which was pegged at one-under-par. Only the top 65 and ties moved on to the weekend.
Tabuena’s round included an eagle and three birdies, but he just had too many bogeys – six.
Sean Ramos shot 75 and Lloyd Jefferson scored 73 and tied for 125th, while Aidric Chan (76), Carl Jano Corpus (77) and Justin Quiban (73) were all jammed at 149 in a tie for 132nd.
Expectedly, Tabuena would be the most disheartened among the Filipino players. He had been tipped to figure prominently in the chase for the top prize of the $2 million event, having competed in all five LIV Golf events in the last two months and considered to be in top form.
But, at the same time, one wonders whether LIV Golf may have slightly dulled Tabuena’s usually sharp game. LIV has no cuts and pay is assured down to the bottom finishers where Tabuena, unfortunately, has found himself quite often.
