DAVAO – Mafy Singson inched closer to securing her first professional victory on home turf, staging a strong finish to salvage a 72 and take a two-stroke lead over Sarah Ababa after two rounds of the Ladies Philippine Golf Tour Apo Golf Classic on Wednesday.
Struggling in challenging conditions at the Apo course, Singson turned a four-over card after 12 holes. However, she mounted a late surge with four birdies, including a three-string feat from No. 13, propelling her to the top at 145.
Singson: 'I want to do well'
“This is my home course, so obviously I want to do well,” said Singson. “But then it’s also the home course of a few other players, so I have to keep that in mind as well.”
With just 18 holes separating her from a dream championship, the seasoned national team player emphasized the need for patience and a solid performance in the final round.
“I need a lot of patience and hope to play well,” she said.
Singson is no stranger to success on the LPGT, having secured titles at Splendido Taal in 2022 and at Valley Golf last year while playing as an amateur.
Despite bogeys on 2, 5, 9, and 12, she dominated the par-5 No. 13, birdied the next two, and gained another stroke on the par-3 17th to complete her fiery windup for a 39-33.
Ababa is 2 shots down
In second place, Ababa posted a 75 for a total of 147. The local ace seemed on track to retain the lead with a birdie on No. 13 but couldn't match Singson’s strong finish.
Mikha Fortuna, the early leader, drove past Ababa with a birdie on the first hole but struggled with four bogeys at the back nine. She finished third at 149, matching Singson’s birdie on the 17th with a 76.
Chanelle Avaricio held on to fourth place with a birdie-less 78, standing at 153. Rev Alcantara and Harmie Constantino tied at fifth with 155 after Alcantara matched par-72.
Miya Legaspi totaled 156 with a 78, Laurea Duque carded a six-over 157, and rookie pro Lois Kaye Go joined reigning Order of Merit winner Daniella Uy at ninth with a 159 after making a 78. Uy continued to struggle with an 82 after a 77.
