JUVIC Pagunsan had a scorching finish in a rain-delayed final round, hitting three birdies in the final four holes for a 69 but it wasn’t enough as the Filipino parbuster settled for joint second place in the Enjoy Jakarta Indonesia PGA Championship of the OneAsia Tour on Sunday.
Michio Matsumura of Japan recovered from a sluggish start and claimed the title with a closing 68 for a 21-under 267 total. Pagunsan wound up tied with Rhein Gibson of Australia, who had the tournament low of 62, a stroke behind at 268.
Pagunsan made two birdies on the front nine and got back to even for the day when he bogeyed Nos. 10 and 14 before his red-hot finish at Damai Indah Golf’s 7,160-yard Bumi Serpong Damai course.
The shotmaker from Bacolod, who started the day a stroke behind in joint second, finished at 20-under.
Gibson zoomed to the top early with an eagle on No. 5 and six birdies on the front nine.
The Australian hit four more birdies before a bogey on No. 16, while Matsumura had six birdies on the back nine to seal the win, recovering after a disastrous front nine that featured a bogey and a double-bogey against just one birdie.
Matsumura bagged US$180,000 (around P8 million), while Pagunsan and Gibson pocketed US$87,500 each (around P3.9 million).
