JUVIC PAGUNSAN fired a two-under 70 to lie four strokes off the lead after the opening round of the Japan Tour’s Canon Open on Thursday at the Totsuka Country Club in Totsuka-ku, Yokohama.

Pagunsan suffered back-to-back bogeys from the second hole but birdied Nos. 4 and seven for an even 36 on the front nine.

The 34-year-old shotmaker from Bacolod picked up shots on the par-4 No. 12 and par-5 16th to end up two under for the day and trail Yuta Ikeda and Yuki Sato, who both had 66s.

2009 winner Ikeda had a near-flawless round featuring six birdies, while Sato had a bogey on No. 1 before coming up with seven birdies including four straight from No. 13.

In solo third was Taichi Teshima at five-under 67, while Ryo Ishikawa was in a group that included Shigeki Maruyama and Asian Tour campaigner Jeev Milkha Singh at 68.
