JUSTIN Quiban fired a six-under 66 for a one-stroke lead over Clyde Mondilla and Joenard Rates halfway through the Central Azucarera de Tarlac Open at the Luisita Golf and Country Club in Tarlac.
The 21-year-old Quiban birdied the par-3 17th from 35 feet out, finishing with eight birdies to negate his double-bogey on the par-4 No. 14.
He was at eight-under 136.
“My putts on the sixth and seven were both from difficult downhill lies but I managed to get a nice read and made them,” said Quiban.
Erstwhile frontrunner Andrew Campbell (74) of Australia and Sweden’s Oskar Arvidsson (76) fumbled and tumbled down the leaderboard.
At 137 is Mondilla, who fired a 67 sparked by a three straight birdies from No. 3.
Rates also had a 67 for a seven-under total.
Rates, who last won in Baguio in 2014, also sizzled with seven birdies against two bogeys on preferred lies.
Jhonnel Ababa also shot a 67 with seven birdies and two bogeys for a 139, tied with Campbell, Charles Hong, Englishman Grant Jackson and Matthew Negri of the US.
