LIV Golf has added another feather to its cap with the acquisition of world No. 3 Jon Rahm, a move that could be a game-changer for the burgeoning circuit.
The Spanish golf sensation, aged 29, and the current Masters champion, has committed to LIV Golf, signaling a significant shift in his allegiance away from the PGA Tour.
Rahm withdrawal from TGL
Rahm's decision was hinted at by his withdrawal from the TGL (the tech-infused league led by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy), which was subsequently postponed until 2025. Additionally, he was not listed for the PGA Tour's upcoming American Express, where he is the defending champion.
During a conference call with reporters, Rahm shed light on the motivations behind his move.
He expressed a liking for the LIV Golf product, the prospect of playing in diverse countries, and the innovative approach the league is championing.
While acknowledging there might be criticism, Rahm is confident in his decision and believes it is the best for him, his family, and his legacy.
Rahm, who will reportedly have his own team within LIV, refrained from divulging detailed terms of his new deal. However, ESPN reported that LIV is actively recruiting more players, and expanding its roster.
Previously vocal about wanting Sergio Garcia, another Spanish golf luminary, to be part of LIV Golf during the Ryder Cup, Rahm still hopes to contribute to future editions of the prestigious tournament.
The biennial clash against the Americans was noted by Rahm as a significant factor in his decision to leave for LIV.
Addressing his earlier reservations about the LIV format, Rahm acknowledged a shift in perspective.
