JHONNEL Ababa and Zanieboy Gialon hit late birdies to card 69s to share the lead after the second round of the ICTSI Calatagan Golf Challenge at the Calatagan Golf Club on Thursday in Batangas.
The two were at five-under 139, ahead of Jay Bayron who fired a 70 for joint third with first-round leader Guido Van der Valk of the Netherlands, who survived a rollercoaster round of 71, and long-hitting Orlan Sumcad, who fired a 69.
Former Philippine Open champion Gerald Rosales turned in a 71 to seize solo sixth at 141.
Gialon stressed the need to take a conservative approach on some holes, ruing his errant drive into the woods on No. 10 that resulted in a double-bogey.
“I need to be careful, particularly off the tee. Dapat laging sure-ball lang,” said Gialon.
Tony Lascuña and Lexus Keoninh, Paul Harris and Nicolas Paez of the US and two others were at 142, while Clyde Mondilla (70) and five others were at 143.
Lascuña, seeking a follow-up to his victory at Manila Masters at Eastridge last April, eagled the par-5 18th in the P2.5 million tournament sponsored by ICTSI and the event organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.
