DAVAO CITY – A part-time caddie and a pair of siblings shared the limelight at the close of the JGFP Mindanao Junior Open at the Apo Golf and Country Club on Friday.
Nino Villasencio, 18, dominated the boys’ 15-18 division, closing with a 76 to beat Simon Wahing by seven shots. He also dominated the 54-hole World Amateur Golf Rankings event on 219.
Still recovering from a minor scooter accident the night before, Villasencio rallied with two birdies in the last four holes to complete 36 holes on 147.
Gan siblings score
Nicole Gaisano Gan topped the girls’ WAGR event, the youngest to do so at 12 years old.
She carded a 78 to finish the WAGR event on 232, six shots ahead of Crista Minoza who returned an 82.
On 156, Gan bagged the girls’ 13-14 bracket, seven shots ahead of Singapore’s Asara Sawhney who closed with an 84.
Stephanie Gaisano Gan, only six years old, made it a family affair when she ruled the girls’ 8-and-under in come-from-behind fashion.
Starting at the back, Gan opened a six-shot lead over Soleil Molde at the turn but threw it all with a fat 10 on the sixth hole.
She fell three strokes going into the last two holes but caught up with a faltering Molde to force a sudden-death playoff.
Molde found the bunker on her approach, made a poor blast and was on in four. She took three putts to hole out.
Meanwhile, Gan safely put the ball on the green on her third shot and two-putted for par.
Baticans deliver, too
Ralph Rian Batican and sister Rafella clinched the titles in their respective divisions.
Ralph took care of business in the boys’ 11-12, closing with a 74 to whip Jared Saban by four shots. He finished on 154 as Saban limped home on 83.
Rafella, on the other hand, was the runaway winner in the girls’ 9-10 after a closing 72.
Patrice Hizon, the three-year-old daughter of PBA star Vince Hizon and celebrity host Patricia Bermudez, clinched the girls’ 6-and-under title.
The other division winners were Alexis Nailga, boys’ 13-14; Kimberly Barroquillo, girls’ 11-12; Laurence Saban, boys’ 9-10; Lucas Revilleza, boys’ 7-8; and Jhob Bastes, boys’ 6-and-under.
The Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines goes to Cagayan de Oro next week for the Mindanao Junior Open at the Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club.
