JESON Patrombon defeated Liang Wen-chu of Chinese Taipei, 7-5, 6-0, on Tuesday to open his bid in the PSC-Philta International Men’s Futures Open at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City.
Patrombon admitted having opening-day jitters in the first set when he blew a 3-0 lead. But he regained his bearings to take the set and cruise to victory by blanking the Taiwanese in the second set.
“Basta opening game, mahirap talaga,” said Patrombon, who is ranked 1,209th in the world and part of the Hope Tennis Academy in Taiwan. “Medyo naninigas ako sa first set, mabuti at nakuha ko ‘yung laro ko nung second set.”
Patrombon will play either Filipino-Spaniard Diego Garcia-Dalisay or third-seed Kento Takeuchi of Japan in the next round.
PJ Tierro was not as fortunate as Patrombon as the Davis Cupper bowed to seventh-seed Hung Jui-chen of Chinese Taipei, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3.
Johnny Arcilla will make his debut on Wednesday with Francis Casey Alcantara and Elbert Anasta in the first round of the tournament sanctioned by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) and organized by the Philippine Sports Commission, (PSC) Philippine Tennis Association (Philta), Pioneer Insurance, Babolat, Asian Tennis Federation and Philta president and Paranaque City mayor Edwin Olivarez.
The event is also supported by Palm Rock Hotel, Sweet Valley, TCU Aircon sales and services, Globe, Beginnings Baby Products, The Henry Hotel, ROCD Roofworks and International Premier Tennis League (IPTL).
