ONE of the country's most iconic golf events, the Januarius Fil-Am Invitational, promised to shine brighter than ever when it marks the diamond anniversary of its regular and seniors tournaments from November 25 to December 13.

The Baguio Country Club partners with the new management team behind the nearby John Hay Golf vowing to put up the best edition ever of one of the oldest, most prestigious, and best-attended golf events in the country.

Record number of teams

BCC general manager Anthony de Leon and John Hay Golf top executive Bong Arguelles said no less than 301 seniors and men's teams and close to 1,500 players will converge in the country's summer capital to compete in an event that started as a match between Filipino and American golfers.

"More than the numbers, it will be the quality of the tournament that will make this Fil-Am memorable,” said De Leon in the press launch held on Wednesday.

The tournament also implemented a key tweak for its diamond edition, adopting a four-to-play, four-to-count format for five- to six-man teams to open up room for 40 additional teams from the more than a hundred squads on its waiting list.

The BCC and John Hay Golf - two courses with diverse characters that make decisions by team captains on the fielding of lineups crucial to the title race - are also being spruced up to assure pristine conditions during the tournament.

Baguio Country Club's backnine has been closed for weeks now to allow the new Zoysia grass on its greens to develop fiully.

But more than the golf, the Fil-Am Invitational, as in past years, has become the time to reunite with friends or meet new ones, and, for overseas-based Filipinos, the time to enjoy and celebrate the game in Baguio's cool air.
