ERWIN Arcillas stole the limelight from some of the big guns, firing a bogey-free six-under 66 for a three-stroke lead in the first round of the ICTSI Luisita Championship on Wednesday in Tarlac.
Arcillas strung up three straight birdies from No. 15 for a solid start as he tries to make up for a 38th place finish in the season-opener at Anvaya Cove.
“I played relatively good. Everything is in place,” said Arcillas, whose career-best finish was third place in the now-defunct Asean Tour’s Mt. Malarayat leg in 2010.
Angelo Que and Cassius Casas share second, while Miguel Tabuena and six others are in joint fourth after firing 70s.
Que birdied two of the first six holes at the back, dropped a shot on the par-5 16th but made two birdies in the last four holes. The three-time winner on the Asian Tour is pleased with his solid start as he prepares for his stint in the Japan Tour starting next week.
“I will play 16 tournaments in Japan and this event serves as preparation,” said the 37-year-old Que, who tied for fourth in the Indian Open two weeks ago.
Casas hit eagle on his closing hole after a solid second shot from 217 yards that landed seven feet off the cup.
Starting on the back nine, Casas bogeyed No. 11 before hitting birdies on Nos. 13 and 18. He had another bogey on the par-3 No. 6 but birdied the seventh
“It was a good start. I just hope to improve in the next three days,” said Casas.
Tabuena, winner at Anvaya, had a bogey-free round but was not very pleased.
“I struggled with my putting, missing five birdie putts,” said Tabuena, also set to play in Asia and Europe.
“It was very frustrating to see things end this way because of my awful putting. I had no problem with my game but I have to check and refine my putting.”
Others at two-under par were Reymon Jaraula, Michael Bibat, Rufino Bayron and Tony Lascuna.
