ELMER Salvador was a far 10th in the Luisita leg last month but still considered among the favorites at Riviera in Silang in Cavite as he tries to defend the Riviera Classic title starting on Wednesday.
Defending champion Elmer Salvador will start early with Frankie Miñoza and Clyde Mondilla, while Tony Lascuña tees off with Jay Bayron and Keanu Jahns.
Miguel Tabuena will begin play with Marvin Dumandan and Ferdie Aunzo in n the P1.5 million event sponsored by International Container Terminal Services, Inc.
Last year the tournament was part of the Asian Development Tour and now Salvador is confident of his chances to score a repeat against top shotmakers of the Philippine Golf Tour.
“I will just play my game and try to score early,” said the soft-spoken Salvador.
Tabuena, who ruled this year’s kickoff leg at Splendido and placed second in the Manila Masters at Eagle Ridge, struggled to finish tied for 11th at Luisita and also hopes to bounce back.
“I’ve never won here but I’m very happy with my game now. I think that’s one advantage,” said Tabuena, No. 2 in the Order of Merit ranking behind absentee and two-leg winner Angelo Que.
Others seeing action in the 72-hole championship offering a top prize of P270,000 and organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. are Mars Pucay, Arnold Villacencio, Joenard Rates, Rufino Bayron, Zanie Boy Gialon and Mondilla.
