College golf comes to the fore in NGAP tilt

    Mar 21, 2013
“We want our players to stay in school and at the same time excel as athletes, that’s why the NGAP is giving them this tournament,” says NGAP president Tommy Manotoc. Jerome Ascano

LYCEUM looms as the early favorite with former junior wonder Wolen Superal and veteran campaigner Lawrence Celestino leading the charge, while La Salle fields three teams in the first-ever Inter-Scholastic Invitational to be staged by the National Golf Association of the Philippines in the next two weekends.

Canlubang Golf and Country Club, the well-manicured traditional championship course south of Manila, will play host to the 72-hole event. Among the teams seeing action are Ateneo, La Salle, La Salle Greenhills, and St. Benilde.

Teams will be made up of four players with each to field three per day and the top two scores counting in the event presented by the MV Sports Foundation.

“A college degree remains to be the main priority for our youth,” NGAP president Tommy Manotoc said. “We want our players to stay in school and at the same time excel as athletes, that’s why the NGAP is giving them this tournament.”

A top prize of P100,000 will be given to the sports program of the winning school. Second place in the event, part of the PLDT Group’s Amateur Golf Tour, is worth P50,000.
