Clyde Mondilla took command with a stellar five-under par 67 to seize the lead in the ICTSI Caliraya Springs Championship in Cavinti, Laguna on Thursday.

In a dramatic turn of events, Mondilla capitalized on Keanu Jahns' misfortune on the 18th hole, turning a two-shot swing to his advantage.

Double bogey hurts Jahns

The momentum shifted as Jahns, leading by a stroke over Mondilla after 17 thrilling holes, encountered an unfortunate break with his drive landing in a divot on the closing par-4 hole. This led to a challenging finish and a double bogey for Jahns, who concluded with a 68.

“I was unlucky and couldn’t do much. With a hazard lying ahead, falling short wasn’t an option,” Jahns rued.

His overshoot resulted in a difficult position and a score of 6, propelling Mondilla to the forefront at eight-under 208, narrowly edging out Jahns at 209.

The day showcased the exceptional skill of both players, setting the stage for an electrifying showdown for the top prize of P450,000 in the final round.

Mondilla sees Jahns as formidable foe

Mondilla, determined to bounce back from a rare missed cut stint last month, recognized Jahns as a formidable opponent, emphasizing the need for a solid performance in the concluding 18 holes.

“Keanu is a formidable player, so I need to step up my game tomorrow to secure victory,” said Mondilla, acknowledging the comprehensive skill set required to conquer Caliraya Springs Golf Club.

Meanwhile, Jahns remained optimistic in his pursuit of his first Philippine Golf Tour victory, stressing the importance of precision in driving, iron play, and putting to create birdie opportunities.

The duo's duel left them ahead of the competition, including halfway joint leaders Aidric Chan and Tae Soo Kim, alongside Eric Gallardo and last year’s winner Tony Lascuña.

As the championship organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. heads into its final 18 holes, the outcome will likely be determined by a combination of power, strategy, and perhaps a stroke of luck.
