RUFINO Bayron and Clyde Mondilla had near-flawless outings, Frankie Minoza came up with a vintage performance and Miguel Tabuena recovered from a huge slip with a sizzling finish for a strong start to their title bids on Thursday in the Resorts World Masters.
A day of low scoring at Manila Southwoods ended with the leaderboard crowded at the top, with Thailand’s Danthai Boonma and Rattanon Wannasrichan, Taipei’s Lin Wen Tang and Hung Chien-Yao, Johannes Veerman of the US and Jyoti randhawa of India all scoring 64s.
Bayron was two strokes off the pace after hitting seven birdies against one bogey to join a big group in 11th spot including Mondilla, who after dropping a shot on No. 2 also hit seven birdies for a 66.
The 56-year-old Minoza was just a stroke further off at 67, suffering a bogey on No. 2 but recovering with six birdies including three straight from No. 14.
Tabuena also fired a 67, closing his round with four straight birdies.
The 22-year-old Tabuena was already at three under when he suffered a double-bogey on the par-4 No. 14 but birdied the remaining holes for a share of 18th spot.
