    Mar 21, 2019

ANGELO Que steadied himself after a disastrous back-nine slip, hitting birdie on No. 18 to stand just a stroke off the pace early in the first round of the Maybank Championship on Thursday in Malaysia.

The Filipino shotmaker had an amazing run of nine birdies in 11 holes at the Saujana Golf and Country Club to briefly take the top spot.

Back-to-back bogeys from No. 15 saw Que slide down the leaderboard but the former Philippine Open champion managed to birdie the closing hole for a 66.

Australia’s Marcus Fraser and Spain’s Nacho Elvira fired 65s to share the top spot of the event co-sanctioned by the European Tour and Asian Tour.

Matthias Schwab of Austria and Jazz Janewattananond of Thailand also fired 66s to share third spot with Que.

Thomas Pieters was at five under, while Presidents Cup international team captain Ernie Els was in a big group at four under.
