SONIC GAMES are renowned for their speed right? So let's cut to the chase and go for an overdrive when talking about the latest game in the franchise, Sonic X Shadow Generations.
SEGA has been making a plethora of headlines this 2024 especially through their RPG games, now does this apply to their mascot as well?
A plethora of roadblocks ahead
Sonic X Shadow Generations is full of challenges and obstacles, not because of a clunky gameplay or anything negative in terms of performance, in fact the game barely has any flaws to begin with.
The challenges and obstacles that I'm referring to are actually the cornerstone of its gameplay, as players will have a plethora of stages to accomplish, each having a unique feature that makes them enjoyable which in turn adds a lot of replayability and variety.
With the degree of difficulty caused by random enemies and roadblocks that players need to traverse, things can get really wacky, and they could reach a different magnitude with giant trains or some Dr. Strange levels of reality warping. In addition, there are boss battles that players need to face, even involving the classic Sonic foes like Dr. Eggman and the Biolizard.
And speaking about warping into the classics, that's one of the central arcs of the story as Sonic and Shadow would traverse across numerous timelines, allowing players to relieve the Sonic maps from the past. Remember the lush pixelated forest from the very first map in Sonic the Hedgehog? You'll encounter them both on 2D and even 3D.
The change in scenery is amazing
Whether you love the classic 2D platforming or the modern 3D landscape, Sonic X Shadows has many ways to keep are toes on the edge, and players will be forced to try both modes in order to unlock certain passages or areas.
Either method is full of thrills as the 2D playthroughs feel like returning back from the glory days of Sonic, while the 3D counterparts would add a different twist into the mix. There are even moments when the two dimensions would merge into one.
But it's not only the changes in dimensions where players get a chance to witness a different playing field as Sonic X Shadows Generations is full of varying environments, and this will depend on your chosen character.
Whether you play as Sonic or Shadow, there are different perks that players could utilize, from Sonic riding a skateboard, or summoning his pals Knuckles, Tails, etc., to Shadow hanging on an eagle to switch locations, or surfing with a mutated stingray to traverse across rivers, there's so much that the game has to offer.
And it doesn't just end on the main missions of the game as players will also have control of both Sonic and Shadow even during their downtime, each having distinct features.
Choosing Sonic will allow players to interact with his friends in a 2D setting, while Shadow provides players the opportunity to practice and hone their skills due to the broad exploration of his area. In addition, players will also get a chance to dig deep into Shadow's backstory given the appearances of Maria and Professor Gerald Robotnik.
Plus there are more differences that will be tackled.
Sonic vs. Shadow
In terms of gameplay, Sonic is more beginner friendly as players have more freedom to commit errors and chances are you'll get a B-rating for every mission. In typical Sonic fashion, the name of the game is pure speed.
Shadow, on the other hand, has smoother controls and broader abilities. With Shadow, players have access to his chaos abilities, allowing them to stop time or unleash a flurry of punches or projectile attacks against random enemies, which makes him more fun to play.
However the grading requirements are more intense with the black hedgehog as players are encouraged to protect their rings at all costs.
For starters it is recommended to play the blue hedgehog first given its less punishing mechanics, plus the narratives are smoother when you understand the perspectives of Sonic before that of Shadow's
However there's nothing wrong if players prefer the edgier hedgehog given the plethora of exciting elements he has, and no matter what your choice is, Sonic X Shadow Generations will surely be a blast.
CONCLUSION
If you grew up in the 80s or 90s where you fell in love with Sonic the Hedgehog, expect that you'll experience the same amount of emotions upon touching Shadow Generations. Everything about this game screams SONIC! from the level designs, the gameplay, the characters, and even the music. Yes you can relieve the famous songs from the previous titles.
Even newcomers will enjoy the game as the narrative isn't a daunting experience, while its gameplay sequences are filled with a lot of blitzing speeds, explosions, but most important of them all, excitement.
Truly it is a love letter to diehard fans, and the beauty of this game will definitely receive a plethora of stamp approvals from Knuckles, while making us forget that creepypasta known as Sonic.exe.
At the end of the day, it's not a surprise as to why this game sold over a million copies on the opening day.
