THE Philippines closed the 2022 AFF U23 Championship campaign with a 2-1 win over Brunei Darussalam on Sunday at the Prince Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Dennis Chung and Sandro Reyes scored in the 48th and 58th minute to give the Young Azkals the full three points. They ended the Group A campaign with four points.
Young Azkals place third
Muhammad Hakeme Yazid bin Said got Brunei on the board in the 59th but couldn’t score the equalizer.
With Timor Leste beating Cambodia, 1-0, also on Sunday, the Azkals U23 placed third in the group and missed on a spot in the next round.
Young Azkals coach Stewart Hall was glad to close the tournament with a win as they shifted their focus to the Southeast Asian Games.
“Right from the start, we started really bright. We had two corners in the first three minutes. We created chances but we missed the chances," Hall said.
"Obviously, they are in the game. And the referee also is having a nightmare. At halftime, we talked about what we needed to do better and we had two quick goals.”
