PHILIPPINE men’s football team coach Michael Weiss has signed the six-month contract extension with the Philippine Football Federation that contains an extension clause hinging on the Azkals' performance in two big tournaments in the future.
No less than the German mentor confirmed the development on Tuesday when Spin.ph caught up with him during halftime of the United Football League match between Global FC and Green Archers United at the Emperador Stadium in Mckinley Hill.
Hesitant to sign a “solely, blank” initial six-month offer, Weiss finally agreed to sign the short-term deal after a month of negotiations when an extension clause was added to the deal.
The extension will be given in case the Azkals advance to the main tournament of the Asian Football Confederation Challenge Cup next year and eventually to the more prestigious AFC Asian Cup the year after.
“It’s an agreement which has several options depending on results but rather than talking about the duration, I want to talk about the reason and the reason is the 2015 Asian Cup,” he said.
“(But) it’s not about me. It’s about the nation and it to succeed,” he added. “If we don’t succeed, there’s gonna be a downfall somehow for the Philippines and we want to avoid that under all circumstances. That is the thing that counts.”
To reach the Challenge Cup main tournament, the Azkals have to win the qualifying tournament next month from March 22 to 26 in Manila at the Rizal Memorial Stadium against Turkmenistan, Brunei, and Cambodia.
