UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas finally barged into the win column after a come-from-behind victory over University of the East, 2-1, in the UAAP Season 79 men's football tournament on Thursday at the Moro Lorenzo Field in Ateneo.
Goals from AJ Pasion and John de Castro negated Nino Mallen's early conversion for UE to give UST its first win of the season.
Coming off back-to-back defeats, including a 5-1 drubbing from Ateneo, the Golden Booters looked like they were set for another heartbreak as the Red Warriors needed just 11 minutes to find their opening goal.
The Golden Booters were found ball watching as Jasper Absalon picked Mallen on the right side of the box, which the latter calmly headed into the back of the net.
The Red Warriors then controlled possession for much the first half before Pasion's equalizer turned the tide around for good in favor of UST.
Pasion was found leaking on the counter, tipped the ball past the scrambling goalkeeper Frank Rieza and squeezed a kick past the desperate UE defenders in the 42nd minute.
That equalizer turned out to be a shot in the arm for the Golden Booters as they upped the pressure that got rewarded with a match winner just minutes after the interval. John de Castro scored his first goal of the season with a follow-up on his deflected header from the set-piece.
The Warriors never recovered since as they dropped to seventh in the table with just a single point, ahead of the scoreless Adamson.
The Golden Booters' first three points moved them into fifth.
