UNIVERSITY of the Philippines opened its title-retention campaign with a 1-0 win over University of the East on Wednesday in the UAAP men’s football tournament at the Ateneo field.
Jinggoy Valmayor scored the lone goal of the match in the 42nd minute.
In other results, rookie Leo Carlo Liay delivered in the 92nd minute as Ateneo nipped University of Santo Tomas, 1-0, for its first win after settling for a scoreless draw with University of the East in the opener.
UST, which played without suspended players Patrick O’Neal and Jajomar Valdez, has three points after a win and a loss.
In other matches, De La Salle bounced back from an opening-day loss to Far Eastern University by routing National University, 4-0.
