    Oct 7, 2012

GENERAL Trias held powerhouse Global to a scoreless draw on Sunday to emerge as the surprise leader in Group A in the United Football League Cup at The Fields in Nuvali, Sta. Rosa, Laguna.

Looming as a dark horse pick in its group, General Trias gave Global, a team with nine national teams players in its fold, a run for its money as both teams earned a point for the stalemate.

Although tied in their bracket with four points each, General Trias, the Korean-laden squad based in Cavite, gained the group lead owing to a superior goal difference.

In another surprising result, Philippine Army blanked Stallion, 2-0, to gain the early lead in Group D.

Ricardo Becite and Luisito Brillantes struck for a veteran-laden Army squad in the upset against Stallion, the top seed in their group.

Philippine Air Force, meanwhile, started its title-retention bid on a high note, dumping Agila, 2-0, in the day’s last game.

Kaya barged into the win column as well after scoring a 2-0 victory over Forza in Group B.

Nate Burkey scored twice for Kaya, which finished second to Global in the last League play, to emerge as the early scoring leader in the league with three points.

In Group C action, Pachanga, the reigning Division 2 titlist, defeated Mendiola, 3-0, while Nomads downed Laos.

Ariel Zerrudo struck twice for Pachanga, while Jason Cunliffe, Guam’s national team captain, added a goal off a penalty kick in the blowout victory that moved the squad to the top of its group.
