Ateneo de Cebu standout Zachary Huang sees himself a perfect fit for UST Tigers

    Mar 9, 2015

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas-bound Zachary Huang believes he is a good fit for the Growling Tigers, hoping he could immediately help the team fill the void in its decimated frontcourt.

The 17-year-old Huang said choosing to play for the Espana-based school has a lot to do with the Growling Tigers’ lack of big men in the coming season following the departure of Aljon Mariano and Paole Pe from the team.

“They are rebuilding in my position so I think I will fit in,” said the 6-foot-3 Huang minutes after helping Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu win the National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) National High School Championship at the expense if multi-titled San Beda.

Huang admitted being excited of joining the Tigers, saying he will go back to Manila after his graduation at SHS-AdC.

Before leaving high school, Huang helped the Magis Eagles win another title after beating the Red Cubs, 82-78, to win the NBTC championship on Sunday.

It was the third league crown for the Cebu-based school since the tournament inception eight years ago, but the first against a UAAP or NCAA playing team.

During the championship game, Huang finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, three assists, a steal, and two blocks in an all-around effort in his final game as a Magis Eagle.

Huang is happy all the frustrations of losing against a Metro Manila team in the NBTC finals has finally been exorcised as he offered the win to his coaches at SHS-AdC.

“Ever since I joined the Ateneo basketball team, we always fell short to the NCR teams. We felt that for the last game of our batch, we want to leave something to the school and reward our coaches for training us and molding the players that we are,” said Huang.
